The PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament has been minting tour players since 1965. Today it runs from mid-September to mid-December across more than two dozen sites: Pre-Qualifying for players with no status, First Stage for the largest wave of college graduates and mini-tour pros, Second Stage where seasoned veterans collide with the next generation, and Final Stage at TPC Sawgrass, where the top five finishers earn PGA TOUR membership and everyone else leaves with Korn Ferry Tour priority.

For the amateur game, Q-School is the bridge. The same names atop college leaderboards and the world amateur rankings all summer show up here each fall, playing for the right to turn professional with a job waiting. AmateurGolf.com follows every amateur in every field, from the first Pre-Qualifying tee shot to Sunday at Sawgrass.

PGA TOUR Q-School — frequently asked

What is PGA TOUR Q-School?

Q-School — officially the PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament presented by Korn Ferry — is the annual multi-stage qualifying competition for the PGA TOUR, Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR Americas. It runs from September through December with Pre-Qualifying, First Stage, Second Stage and Final Stage.

How many PGA TOUR cards are awarded at Q-School?

Under the current format the top five finishers at Final Stage earn PGA TOUR membership for the following season, with a hole-by-hole playoff breaking any tie for fifth. Finishers 6–45 earn Korn Ferry Tour membership with reorder protection, and every other Final Stage player receives Korn Ferry Tour and PGA TOUR Americas status.

Can amateurs play in PGA TOUR Q-School?

Yes. Amateurs with a course handicap of 0.0 or better are eligible and can advance through every stage, but must turn professional to accept PGA TOUR, Korn Ferry Tour or PGA TOUR Americas membership. Several amateurs reach Second Stage each year, and occasionally one reaches Final Stage.

Where is Final Stage played?

Final Stage is contested over 72 holes with no cut at TPC Sawgrass (Dye's Valley Course) and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, in mid-December.

How many players advance from each stage?

Advancement is pro rata by field size — historically around 18–22 players per First and Second Stage site — producing a Final Stage field of roughly 165–175 players.
