ATLANTA — Carter Loflin of the University of Georgia surged to the top of the leaderboard after 36 holes and will take a three-shot lead into Friday's third round of the 79th Dogwood Invitational at Druid Hills Golf Club. Loflin followed an opening-round 67 with a bogey-free 65 on Thursday to reach 12-under-par 132, positioning himself as the player to catch heading into the final two rounds of one of amateur golf's premier championships.
The Georgia senior has been one of the hottest players in the Southeast this summer. Earlier this year, Loflin captured medalist honors at the Linger Longer Collegiate at Reynolds Lake Oconee, and he arrived at Druid Hills fresh off a runner-up finish at the Georgia State Amateur. Through two rounds, he has carried that momentum seamlessly into the Dogwood, recording just one bogey while piling up 13 birdies.

Loflin's second-round performance was particularly impressive. After posting a 5-under 67 in the opening round, he went even lower on Thursday with a 7-under 65 that featured seven birdies and no dropped shots. He turned in 31 after birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 6, and 8 before adding three more birdies coming home. His 65 matched the low round among players who have completed 36 holes and allowed him to overtake first-round leader Clark Xander Goboy.
Goboy, a standout from North Carolina State, sits alone in second place at 9-under 135. He electrified the field with a first-round 63 that included an eagle and eight birdies, opening a four-shot lead after the first day. While he couldn't maintain that pace in round two, posting an even-par 72, Goboy remains well within striking distance as the championship moves into its middle stages.
A trio of players shares third place at 8-under 136. Emory's Kevin Mu backed up his opening 67 with a 69, Wake Forest's Kyle Haas followed a first-round 66 with a 70, and Loyola Marymount's Nateeshvar Anatha Ganesh posted the steadiest pair of rounds in the group with matching 68s. All three trail Loflin by four shots with 36 holes remaining.
The leaderboard remains tightly packed behind the leaders. Krishnav Nikhil Chopraa of Long Beach State, UNC Charlotte's Chase Cline, and Bodie Brumlow are tied for sixth at 6-under 138. Georgia State's Brody Tidwell recorded one of the day's best rounds, a 5-under 67, to move into a tie for ninth at 5-under alongside Kentucky's Cole Stockard, Iowa State's Owen Sawyer, and TCU's Nathan Miller.
Several players made significant moves during the second round. Sterling Hurd, a University of Texas commit, bounced back from an opening 75 with a tournament-low-tying 66 to climb into a tie for 20th at 3-under. Kentucky's Gavin Clutts and North Carolina's Asher Vargas each fired 67s to vault into a tie for 13th at 4-under, while South Carolina's Brock Blais improved by eight shots from round one to round two with a 67 that moved him into a tie for 28th.
With two rounds still to play before Saturday's championship finale, plenty of golf remains. But through 36 holes, Loflin has established himself as the man to beat. His combination of consistency, elite ball-striking, and recent winning form has given him control of the tournament heading into Friday's third round, where he will look to extend his advantage and move one step closer to adding the Dogwood Invitational title to his growing résumé.
