Lytham St. Annes, England — Defending Smyth Salver winner Paula Martin Sampedro made the strongest start among the seven amateurs in the field at the AIG Women's Open, opening with a 2-under 69 to sit T-8th after the first round at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The Stanford senior from Spain, ranked No. 2 in the world, claimed low-amateur honors with a T-8 finish at last year's championship at Royal Porthcawl.
