The road to Sand Valley is closed. After qualifiers at nearly 70 sites across the country, the field for the 45th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship is set, and with the first tee shot now just 11 days away, the numbers behind it tell you everything about where this championship sits in the amateur game right now.
A record 6,124 players entered — eclipsing the previous mark of 6,060 set in 2023 — all chasing one of 264 spots at Sand Valley Resort in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, September 26-October 1. For a championship restricted to amateurs 25 and older with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or better, that's not a niche event. That's the biggest tournament in the post-college game, and it has never been harder to get into.
What they're playing for
The stakes explain the entry record. The champion at Sand Valley takes home the Robert T. Jones Memorial Trophy, exemptions into the next two U.S. Amateurs, a ten-year Mid-Amateur exemption — and, in the tradition that has held since 1988's expansion of amateur invitations, a likely invitation to the 2027 Masters Tournament. One week at a Wisconsin sand barrens resort, and an April tee time at Augusta National can follow.
The exempt class
Leading the players who bypassed qualifying: defending champion Brandon Holtz, who defeated Jeg Coughlin III 3&2 at Troon last fall to earn his own trip to the Masters. But the name that hangs over every Mid-Amateur is Stewart Hagestad. The 35-year-old from Newport Beach won this championship in 2016, 2021 and 2023, and a fourth title at Sand Valley would break his tie with Jay Sigel for the most in championship history. The venue could hardly suit him better: his 2023 win came at Sleepy Hollow, a C.B. Macdonald design — and The Lido is Macdonald's lost masterpiece brought back to life.
The exempt group also includes Grady Brame Jr., the 2026 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball champion; 2025 semifinalist Christian Cavaliere; 2025 quarterfinalists Christian Brand and Parker Edens; 2015 champion Sammy Schmitz, back on Wisconsin-adjacent turf; Haymes Snedeker, low amateur at the 2026 U.S. Senior Open; and the Mid-Amateur-eligible point leaders in the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of July 15.
Who punched through qualifying
The 18-hole qualifiers produced their usual mix of firepower and survival stories. Michael Pearson posted the low round of the summer, a 64 at Cherokee Town & Country Club in Atlanta — matched only in Utah, where Cole Ogden and Elijah Turner both shot 64 at Wasatch Mountain, and in Nevada, where Matthew Mitchell went 64 at Boulder Creek. Joey Jordan opened the entire qualifying season with a 65 at Willow Oaks in Richmond, and Mike Donner torched Crag Burn with a 65 in western New York.
The best story in the field might be the shortest commute: Adam Miller of Nekoosa — Sand Valley's own hometown — qualified at Lake Arrowhead, minutes from the resort gates. At the other extreme, Travis Hunter traveled from Southern California to Anchorage and took the lone spot at Moose Run with a 74. The qualifiers also delivered an international flavor: Harrison Arnold and Toby Briggs of England, Ireland's Ben Phipps, Belgium's Sam Echikson, Japan's Yutaka Toyoshima and a strong Canadian contingent all earned their way to Wisconsin.

The format
All 264 players contest two rounds of stroke play — one each on The Lido and the Sand Valley Course — on September 26-27, with the low 64 advancing to match play. Every match play round is on The Lido: the Round of 64 Monday, two rounds Tuesday, quarterfinals and semifinals Wednesday, and a 36-hole championship match Thursday, October 1.
Looking ahead
Sand Valley begins a strong run of Mid-Amateur venues: Jupiter Hills hosts in 2027 and the Country Club of Charleston follows in 2028. But the 2026 edition has a claim to the most anticipated setting of any of them — a re-created C.B. Macdonald masterpiece that almost nobody in the field has played.
