Illinois standout senior and 2024 Big Ten Golfer of the year Jackson Buchanan shines for Illinois in their first win of the season

The Illinois men’s golf team wrapped up their fall season in spectacular fashion, clinching their first win of the year with a nail-biting, two-stroke victory over Kennesaw State at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in Loxley, Alabama. The Illini posted a team score of 30-under 834, delivering rounds of 276-283-275 to edge past Kennesaw State’s consistent 28-under finish (282-281-283).

Illinois set the tone with a season-best 12-under 276 in the opening round, establishing an early lead. On the final day, they held their nerve and finished with an impressive 13-under 275 to secure the victory.

Leading the charge was senior Jackson Buchanan, the Big Ten Golfer of the Year, who followed up last week’s win with another stellar performance. Buchanan’s consistent rounds of 65-65-70 landed him in third place at 12-under 204, marking his best finish this season.

Buchanan is currently ranked No. 4 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.

Sophomore Max Herendeen fired a career-low 66 in the final round, tying for eighth place at 7-under, while fellow sophomore Ethan Wilson added a strong finish with a 68, securing a spot in the top 25.

Junior Ryan Voois continued his solid season with a fourth top-25 finish, while freshman Trey Marrion provided steady support in the final rounds. Competing individually, freshman Jake Birdwell delivered his career-best performance, finishing at 6-under 210 for his first top-10 finish.

In the individual field, Kansas State’s Nicklaus Mason stole the spotlight with rounds of 66-64-69, securing the individual title at 17-under 199 by four strokes. His strong showing also helped Kansas State claim third place on the team leaderboard at 18-under, rounding out a memorable season finale.
