FINAL RESULTS: Western Junior at Knollwood Club - Lake Forest, Illinois

Sciortino surges to seven-shot Western Junior win with closing 68 at Knollwood

Andrew Sciortino saved his best for last.

The 18-year-old from Brentwood, Tennessee, closed with a 4-under-par 68 and surged away from the field on the final day to capture the 108th Western Junior Championship at Knollwood Club. Sciortino finished at 7-under-par 277, a comfortable seven shots clear of the closest competition, after rounds of 72-70-67-68 over the demanding 7,202-yard, par-71 layout in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Sciortino was the only player in the field to finish under par for the championship. After sitting just one shot off the lead through 36 holes, he seized control with a third-round 67 - the low round of the tournament among contenders - and never looked back, adding a bogey-free brand of golf on Thursday to pull away from a crowded leaderboard.

The victory comes with one of amateur golf's most valuable rewards: an exemption into the Western Amateur, widely considered one of the strongest amateur championships in the world. The top three finishers and ties earned spots in that prestigious field.

Behind Sciortino, a tightly bunched group battled for the remaining podium positions. Brady Barnum of Dublin, Ohio, and SJ Thomas of Birmingham, Alabama, shared second place at 2-over-par 286. Thomas, the 15-year-old who had shared the lead through both 36 and 54 holes, closed with a 72 to secure a runner-up finish in one of junior golf's premier events. Barnum, who entered the final 36 holes very much in the hunt, posted a closing 70 to join him.

A three-way tie for fourth followed at 3-over-par 287, featuring New Zealand's Ryan Xie of Auckland, Walker Webb of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Ash Edwards of Boulder, Colorado. Xie closed with a 71 after a third-round 68, Edwards surged up the board with a final-round 68, and Webb remained steady throughout to round out the top tier of finishers earning Western Amateur exemptions.

Brooks Colton of Riviera Beach, Florida, authored one of the more impressive comebacks of the week. After opening with a 79, Colton played his final three rounds in 70-69-70 to finish alone in seventh at 4-over-par 288, a 14-shot improvement from his first round to his best.

Hill Wang of Hacienda Heights, California, and Cody Guetzke of Hartland, Wisconsin, tied for eighth at 5-over-par 289.

A four-way logjam at 6-over-par 290 claimed a tie for 10th, including Kailer Stone of Alameda, California, and Keane Taino of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Stone closed with a 68 to climb the board, while Taino - who had been in contention since opening with a 70 - faded slightly over the weekend rounds. Zude Xu of Rancho Palos Verdes, California, who sat just one shot off the lead through 36 holes, slipped back after a third-round 78 and finished in the same group alongside Parker Rodgers of Nevada, Iowa.

The story of the final two rounds, however, belonged to a pair of overnight co-leaders who could not sustain their pace. Cole Pregler of Fulshear, Texas, who shared the lead through both the first and second rounds, struggled on the weekend with rounds of 78-76 to tumble to 11-over-par 295 and a tie for 25th. Brayden Forte of Aurora, Colorado, also finished in that group after a closing 77.

For Sciortino, the wire-to-strong charge represents a breakthrough on one of junior golf's biggest stages. The Western Junior has long served as a proving ground for future stars - alumni include Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, David Duval and Luke Donald - and Sciortino now adds his name to that storied trophy. With the championship crowning a new winner in the absence of defending champion Charlie Woods, Sciortino's dominant performance ensured the title was decided well before the final group reached the 72nd hole.
