Southwestern Invitational: UCLA Wins, Mueller Medals

The UCLA men win their first tournament of the season, while Kyle Mueller of Michigan is medalist at North Ranch CC

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA (February 27, 2018) - The UCLA Bruins won the Southwestern Invitational on Tuesday, shooting a tournament-low 9-under 279 to finish 20 shots ahead of runners-up Pepperdine.

After a frost delay, play was resumed at a chilly North Ranch Country Club, where scoring was tricky and only UCLA was able to finish under par for the tournament. UCLA finished at 8-under 856.

The Bruins were led by Hidetoshi Yoshihara, who closed with a 69 to finish at 3-under 213 and in third place individually. Cole Madey (72) finished alone in fourth at 1 under, while Devon Bling (69) and Tyler Collier (69) had top-10 finishes. Eddy Lai finished T18 to round out the scoring for UCLA.

Even as UCLA pulled away, Pepperdine secured second place by 15 shots over the University of Tennessee. For the second straight tournament, the Waves were led by Clay Feagler, who finished 5th at even par. Feagler won last week's Prestige at PGA West.

The defending champion Sahith Theegala finished T16 at 4-over 220.

Kyle Mueller of the University of Michigan earned medalist honors, shooting the round of the tournament, a 6-under 66 to post 8-under 208.

Tennessee's Lorenzo Scalise shot his third-straight par-or-better round to finish solo second at 7-under 209, just one shot behind the winner.

Only four players--Mueller, Scalise, Yoshihara and Madey--managed to break par for the tournament.
