Rice Planters: Antcliff wins in playoff

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (June 22, 2013) -- Maverick Antcliff of Augusta State survived a six-hole playoff to defeat second-round leader Austin Cody of Duke, taking the 2013 Rice Planters Amateur title. Antcliff shot a final-round 66 to get even with Cody, who took a one-shot lead over Antcliff Friday after he jumped out to an early first-round lead. Cody finished with a 67 to force the playoff. Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech rallied to finish third, thanks to a final-round 67. He was one shot better than Big East champion Chase Koepka, who fired a tournament-best 65 in the final round to take fourth place. The first round of the scheduled 72-hole event was wiped out from storms passing through the area. Tournament officials decided to begin play Thursday and make it a 54-hole event. Defending champion Thomas Bradshaw of Clemson finished nine shots off the pace. The Rice Planters Amateur Golf Tournament was the inspiration of amateur golfer Dick Horne. During his first Porter Cup at the Niagara Falls Country Club in 1973, Horne befriended cup chairman Dick Harvey. Harvey encouraged a receptive Horne to develop his own southern tournament and, consequently, along with other Porter Cup officials, shared enough useful information to get Horne started in the South. That same year Horne, Tournament Chairman Ernie Chandler and other supporters organized the first Rice Planters Invitational Golf Tournament at Snee Farm Country Club. The annual event features some of the top up-and-coming players in collegiate golf.
