Pepperdine Wins the WCC Championship for the 19th Time

Led by medalist Clay Feagler, Pepperdine University wins the West Coast Conference in record-setting fashion

SANTEE, CA (April 18, 2018) – No. 33 Pepperdine turned in one of the more dominant closing rounds in conference history and rolled to a commanding victory at the 2018 West Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship. Led by medalist Clay Feagler, who flirted with the course record with a 14-under 202, the Waves set a conference record winning the event at 26-under 838.

It is the 19th men’s golf championship for the Waves, who went 13-under in the final round – a tally achieved by BYU in second round action on Tuesday. Four Pepperdine student-athletes posted rounds of at least 2-under on the final round.

This marks the second time in three seasons the conference tournament scoring record has fallen. Saint Mary’s established the previous mark of 25-under 839 in 2016 at Blackhawk Country Club, while BYU shot 24-under 840 last season at Riverside Country Club.

Saint Mary’s posted a runner-up finish with a 1-under 863. No. 40 BYU and No. 50 Santa Clara shared third at 2-over 866, followed by No. 45 San Francisco in fifth at 8-over 872.

Perry Cohen took individual runner-up honors with a 6-under 210, while Pepperdine’s Josh McCarthy and BYU’s Rhett Rasmussen shared third at 5-under 211. Loyola Marymount’s Riley Elmes and Saint Mary’s Pavan Sagoo – who shot a 6-under 66 on the final day – shared fifth place at 4-under 212.

Feagler’s feat was the second lowest tournament score in WCC history, behind Jonathan De Los Reyes of Saint Mary’s who shot a 19-under 197 to lead the Gaels to the 2016 title. The Pepperdine sophomore led the field in birdies (18) and par-4 scoring (3.80/6-under) and was second in par-3 scoring (2.67/4-under).
