Ben Mitchell wins Michael Hebron Amateur at 3-under on Bethpage Black

Ben Mitchell of Fresh Meadow Country Club captured the Michael Hebron Amateur Championship at 3-under 139, the only player to break par over 36 holes on Bethpage Black. Mitchell posted rounds of 68-71 to finish six strokes clear of runner-up Jack Estrella (Old Westbury), who closed at 3-over 145.

Matthew DiFiore (MGA eClub – Long Island) took third at 5-over 147 after a closing 72. Mitchell, who tied for seventh in last year's championship at 7-over, mastered the notorious layout where a warning sign near the first tee cautions players of the course's formidable difficulty. Michael Auerbach (Bellport) and Charles Nevin (Meadow Brook Club) rounded out the top five.

Ben Mitchell came to Bethpage State Park's Black Course on Tuesday knowing what every golfer who tees it up here understands: par is a very good score. By day's end, the Fresh Meadow member was three shots better than that.

Mitchell fired a 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Michael Hebron Amateur Championship, taking a two-shot lead into Wednesday's final 18 holes at the storied Farmingdale layout that has hosted multiple U.S. Opens.
