Kaito Onishi takes over Rice Planters Amateur Lead

Along with Onishi 21 players will begin Saturday even-par or better and within four of the lead

MT. PLEASANT, South Carolina (June 23, 2017) -- USC commit Kaito Onishi fired a bogey-free 5-under 67 to recover from a disappointing first round to move in front at the Rice Planters Amateur hosted by Snee Farm Golf Club. Following a first day 1-over 73, Onishi bounced backed in a big way in the second round as he carded three birdies and a holed out for eagle on the 357 yard par-4 12th. The birdies fell on Nos. 2, 6 and 13. The future Trojan started the tournament about as poorly as one could, but since a 4-over in five hole start on day one Onishi has bogeyed just once in his last 31 holes and has played 7-under golf during the stretch. A trio of players --Juan Guerra (Nova Southeastern), Ryan Marter (Wofford commit) and Wes Artac (Texas Tech)--- are tied for second at 3-under while four others including first round leader Brock Ochsenreiter (Indiana) are sharing fifth at 2-under. ROUND ONE RECAP After round one was postponed at the Rice Planters Amateur, players were able to get out and play Thursday at Snee Farm Golf Club. Evidently, the conditions suited Brock Ochsenreiter of Indiana University (hometown Nashville, TN.) Ochsenreiter (pronounced 'OXEN-writer') has a three shot lead after firing 66 at Snee Farm. He is trailed by Evan Gfeller and Ryan Marter, who both shot 69.
