Jonathan Chen closed with an even-par 72 to finish at 8-under 208 and capture the Monterey City Amateur Championship, holding off a determined chase from Miguel Delgado and John Sawin, Pebble Beach's VP of Golf. Both chasers posted 72s Sunday to finish one back at 7-under 209. Sawin's final-hole bogey—a 5 on the par-4 18th after making the turn in 34—proved costly, denying him a playoff chance after steady rounds of 70-69-70. Delgado carded matching 37-35 splits but couldn't catch Chen, who went out in 37 and steadied with a 35 coming home.
AJ Fitzgerald stormed up the leaderboard with Sunday's low round, a 6-under 64 (32-32) that vaulted him to solo fourth at 3-under 213 after opening 77-72.
Tony Ralph claimed the 36-hole senior division by a shot at 3-over 147 over Trent Tessler, as both players fired 2-under 70's in the second round. Ralph had opened with a 77, and Tessler with 78 so that single shot in round one made the difference.
