Gerardo Gomez comes from behind to win Mexican National Amateur

Gomez finished 14-under and was the lone golfer to shoot all four rounds under par en route to a five shot win

Gerardo Gómez won the Mexican National Amateur Championship at The Club de Golf Mexico after coming from behind during the final round and winning the Percy Clifford Cup after scoring a cumulative 274 (-14) surrounded by a warm crowd that turned out at one of the most iconic courses in the country.

“I am aware of the level I have, and I like to go into every tournament with the mentality that I can win or at least finish in the top part of the field. I am very grateful to my family and my team for supporting me in each of my tournaments,” said the golfer from the Club Campestre de San Luis.

The champion of the ninety-sixth edition of the National Amateur Championship was the only player who achieved a score under par during the four rounds. Gomez is ranked No. 625 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.

The podium was completed by José Antonio Safa, champion in 2022, who finished 9-under, and Javier Delgadillo, who finished 6-under. In the top 10 were in fourth place, Paraguayan Erich Fortlage, Gustavo Rángel from Puerto Rico placed in T5, Chilean Lukas Roessler placed in T8, and Daniel Faccini from Colombia in T10.

For his part, Fernando Lemmen Meyer, president of the Mexican Golf Federation, thanked the host club for its attention during this championship and expressed his satisfaction with the new edition of one of the most important tournaments on the continent.

Gómez has shown his good level of play throughout the season. He obtained the individual victory in the Junior Americas Cup, also imposed conditions in the Copa Centro, and was second in the Amateur South American Open.

The Potosí native obtained an exemption to participate in the 124th US Amateur Championship and the final stage of qualifying for the 125th US Open.
