Full Circle: Hovland's Road from Pebble Beach to the Travelers, the Way Only We Saw It

CROMWELL, Conn. — The putt that beat Scottie Scheffler in a Monday playoff at the 2026 Travelers Championship was, in the end, a very Viktor Hovland putt: unhurried, slightly grinning, the stakes apparently lost on him. It was his eighth career PGA TOUR victory and his first in fifteen months, since the 2025 Valspar Championship. He finished regulation at 21-under, tied with the best player in the world, and then simply outlasted him.

For most of golf, this was a story about Scheffler — about whether anyone could take something from him on a Sunday (or, with the weather, a Monday). For us, it was a homecoming. Because the first time AmateurGolf.com wrote Viktor Hovland’s name, he was a teenager from Oslo who had never won a tournament outside Norway, and the last time we covered him as an amateur, he was rewriting Jack Nicklaus out of the U.S. Open record book. The Travelers was always going to be the bookend. We just didn’t expect him to win it.
