Cal State Fair Amateur: Blake Abercrombie Wins in Style

Late birdies were key for the Sacramento native who tweeted on his final three holes en route to a two shot victory at Haggin Oaks

SACRAMENTO, California (September 4, 2017) — Sacramento native, Blake Abercrombie, was able to capitalize on his 36-hole lead and take victory at the California State Fair Amateur on Monday. The San Diego Aztec Senior posted a 2-under-par 70 to win by two strokes above Stanford Golfer Isaiah Salinda, playing incredibly clutch down the stretch.

“I started slow but I just stayed patient throughout the round. Made a really good up and down on the par-3 14th hole, and after that, the momentum was with me,” recounted Abercrombie following his victory. “I made a 15-foot birdie on the 16th that helped me and closed with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.”

Abercrombie finished the tournament at 16-under 200 (66-64-70).

For a collegiate athlete about to begin his final year of NCAA golf, a late summer win can be extreme boost for a player’s psyche.

“It helps me a ton, both with my confidence level and to just know that I can get it done.”

Other high collegiate finishers include Isaiah Salinda, who finished alone in second place, two back of Abercrombie at 14-under-par for the tournament (66-67-69=202). Stanford’s Bradley Knox and Incoming UCLA Freshman Devondeep Bling finished tied for third place shooting 203 for the tournament and shooting 67 and 70 in their final rounds, respectively.

Last year's champion Ramiz Jamal finished T46 at even par.
