Ole Miss professor birdies second extra hole to edge Bobby Wyatt after final round charge at Snedeker Memorial
Brett Patterson etched his name on the Snedeker Memorial trophy, rolling in a birdie on the second playoff hole to defeat former PGA Tour player Bobby Wyatt in a dramatic finish.
Patterson began the final round T-4 at 3 under 141, four shots behind leader Winburne Hughes. He produced a strong 4 under 68 to climb the leaderboard and reach the playoff. Wyatt, who also started the day T-4, matched that closing 68 to force extra holes. Patterson held his nerve and converted the winning birdie on the second playoff hole.
The victory also earned Patterson an invitation to the Palmetto Amateur.
The Mississippi native balances competitive golf with an academic career. Patterson holds a Ph.D. in accounting, is a certified public accountant, and teaches cost and financial accounting at the University of Mississippi. Last year he recorded eight top-10 finishes in ranked events, highlighted by a victory at the Mississippi Mid-Amateur.
Patterson has also built a strong USGA résumé. He reached the semifinals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur in his debut appearance in 2023 and has now competed in 16 USGA championships, including the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club. He also advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2024 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball alongside Payne Denman.
A three-time all-conference player at Middle Tennessee State, Patterson won the 2024 Mississippi Mid-Amateur and successfully defended the title in 2025, and finished runner-up in both the Mississippi State Amateur and Mississippi Mid-Amateur in 2023.
Wyatt finished runner-up for the second straight year at the Snedeker Memorial after also placing T-2 in the previous edition, six shots behind Nate Smith. The former PGA Tour player, who returned to amateur status in 2021, won the 2025 Crump Cup and now works in Goldman Sachs’ private wealth group in Atlanta.
Winburne Hughes finished third at 6-under after a final round 73, missing the playoff by one stroke.
