Illinois State shattered tournament and individual records en route to the win
Valentin Peugnet shot 17-under to win by five shots and lead Illinois State to a commanding 16-shot win at the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Tex. Illinois State finished at a remarkable 32-under.
Peugnet shot rounds of 68-64-67 to finish 17-under. Peugnet recorded just three bogeys in the entire 54-hole tournament, along with 18 birdies and an eagle.
It was a record-breaking performance for the Redbirds, with Peugnet recording the first sub-200 54-hole score at this tournament since 2011. Illinois State shattered the previous record for the lowest tournament score, as this tournament's 832 broke the previous record by four strokes.
Peugnet tied the lowest tournament in school history with a three-round 199.
Peugnet is currently ranked No. 317 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, jumping over 100 spots thanks to this win.
Peugnet's teammate Alex McCulla finished in solo second place at 12-under with rounds of 66-68-70.
Reggie Zhu of Rice finished in solo third place at 10-under, and Jude Kim of Michigan finished in solo fourth place at 9-under.
Austyn Reily of Houston, Javier Delgadillo of New Mexico State, and Ylan Guerin Pozzalo of Louisana Monroe all shot 8-under to finish T5 and round out the top five.
Lipscomb, North Texas, and Rice all finished 16 shots back at 16-under and T2. Houston, Michigan, and Sam Houston finished T5 at 12-under.
Troy finished in solo eighth place at 11-under, Louisiana Monroe finished in solo ninth place at 10-under, and New Mexico State rounded out the top ten, finishing in solo tenth place at 2-under.
