Windon title marks second consecutive fall trophy for Notre Dame

Two weeks into the fall season, Notre Dame already has two wins. This Fighting Irish program is just the second in school history to do that, and the first since the 1999-2000 squad.

At the Windon Memorial on Tuesday, Notre Dame closed out a five-shot win on Ole Miss with a final-round even-par 284 that was good for a 10-under total. Only the top two teams were under par at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.

“One win in college golf is hard to come by, but to get two and to get them back to back is special,” Notre Dame head coach John Handrigan said. “After winning last week, we challenged each other not to get complacent, but to stay motivated and to stick to our goals. I would say this team definitely answered the challenge.”

Notre Dame got top-5 performances from two men who rolled right off of successful summers on the amateur circuit. Senior Hunter Ostrom, winner of the Eastern Amateur and the Southwestern Amateur, notched his second straight runner-up finish, coming just one stroke shy of what would have been his second collegiate title. Ostrom finished with a 5-under 208 after carding an even-par 71 on Tuesday.

Freshman Palmer Jackson, coming off a quarterfinal run at the U.S. Amateur, was solo fourth at 4 under.

The Irish are now 32-under par through two tournaments and have won by a combined 19 strokes.

In the individual race South Florida’s Albin Bergstrom tied Marquette’s Hunter Eichhorn at 6 under for the title.
