Wilson Furr flirts with history at the Southern Amateur

Carrollton, Texas. – Wilson Furr was playing pedestrianly through 36-holes at the 114th Southern Amateur. All of that changed on Friday. The Alabama senior was as hot as the Texas sun. Posting a 6-under 66, Furr thrust himself into contention. “I’ve been struggling with my wedges coming into the event,” Furr told AmateurGolf.com following his round. “I went and saw my [swing] coach and we’ve been working on them.” His wedges were definitely working on Friday as the highlight of his round came on Furr’s tenth hole of the day, the par-4 1st. Holing out from 144-yards for an eagle, Furr knocked down three more birdies to just one bogey on his final nine holes. “It was awesome,” Furr said. “I had 144 into the wind a little bit and just flighted a pitching wedge in there, landed right behind it, and spun right in.” Opening on No. 10 with a bogey, Furr immediately gained the drop stroke back with a birdie on No. 11 before circling two more birdies on Nos. 14 and 17. With the 66, Furr owns the lowest round of the Southern Amateur so far. Fellow competitor and home-course hero Pierceson Coody held the competitive course record prior to the Maridoe Samaritan Fund Invitational earlier this year. Coody carded a 66 at the 2019 Trans-Mississippi last summer to set the course record last July. The record stood until April when PGA Tour pros came to Maridoe to play in the Maridoe Samaritarian Fund Invitational. Viktor Hovland and Will Zalatoris posted matching 65s in the final round of the MSFI 1.0. Stephen Yeager broke their records with a competitive round of 64 shortly after. With a successful moving day out of the way, Furr is ready to get back on the course for Saturday’s final round. “I feel like my game’s good,” Furr said. “I’m just going to go out and try to make some birdies.”
