Kansas Amateur: Kaden Leivian wins 37 hole marathon final for the title

Kaden Leivian defeated Charlie Haney with a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture the 116th Kansas Amateur Championship at Mission Hills, becoming the youngest winner in tournament history at age 15. Leivian breaks Fred Salmans' 1925 record.

The finalists were all square through regulation 36 holes — both had one hole advantages at various times after going to the afternoon break all square. There was some excitement on the final nine when Leivian birdied Nos. 10 and 11 (the match's 28th and 29th holes) to take a 1-up lead, before a birdie by Haney on the match's 34th hole squared the match.

When they finished that way, they headed for extra holes. On the 37th, Leivian made 3 to Haney's 4 -- conquering a brutal day when the heat index hovered near 100 to close out the marathon match.

The Round of 32 bracket is set at the Kansas Amateur Championship at Mission Hills Country Club, with matches beginning at 8:00 AM Wednesday. Top seed Ben Wheeler advanced with a 4&3 victory and will face No. 32 Zach VanDolah, who also won 4&3. Second seed Asher Whitaker cruised 4&2 and meets Cooper Scheck (4&2 winner), while third seed Harry Crockett dominated 6&5 to earn a match against Coleman Houk (2 up). Notable tight finishes from the Round of 64 include Chance Rinkol prevailing in 19 holes, Regan Kueker winning in 22 holes, and five matches decided 1 up—among them Ty Lasley, Joseph Kinney, Benjamin Stoller, and Jackson Foth, all of whom advance to Wednesday's action.
