Lahinch, County Clare — There is a moment on the fourth hole here when a first-time visitor stops trying to make sense of Lahinch and simply surrenders to it. You are standing in a narrow valley of fairway. In front of you is a dune roughly the size of a parish church. Your target is a white stone painted on top of it. Behind the green you cannot see, there is a wall. And while you are standing there doing the arithmetic, a tee shot from the 18th hole comes sailing across your fairway from the other direction.
None of this should work. It has worked for more than 130 years.
