SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (June 22, 2017) -- As the number of players gets whittled down, Yianni Gogonas of AmateurGolf.com spent some time on the range at Olympic Club talking to players.
One of the featured matches of the day was about to go out, and you would never know either of the players were even the least bit nervous. In the end, it was Danny Ochoa of Carlsbad who won the day, 1-up.
Ochoa went 2-down after five holes, but was able to turn the tide before the front nine was over. He won the challenging 11th and 12th holes with pars as the junior member of Olympic Club struggled with a bogey and double. When Ochoa bogeyed the monster par-5 16th against Lai's steady par, the match was close but Lai couldn't convert birdies on Nos. 17 or 18 so that's where it finished, 1-up in Ochoa's favor.
