U.S. Open Qualifier Niemann wins Mexican International

The victory was the fourth in the last six starts for Niemann to go along with two runner-up showings throughout the stretch

CAMPECHE, Mexico (June 11, 2017) - Besides FedEx St. Jude Classic winner Daniel Berger the only other player in the U.S. Open field to enter the tournament with a victory the week before is Mexican International Amateur winner Joaquin Niemann. The victory was the fourth in the last six starts for Niemann to go along with two runner-up finishes during the stretch. Just days after qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Open and his first career major the USF commit blew away the competition at Campeche Country Club finishing 13-under and eight shots in front of runner-up Jorge Villar Abud (-5). Currently the top-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Niemann improved each day firing rounds of 71-70-68-66. During his 6-under final round Niemann got off to a lightening quick start with birdies on Nos. 1-3 and then three more in a row from Nos. 7-9 to turn in 6-under 31. On the way home Niemann, who played the par-5's in 11-under for the week, was steady throughout the final nine rolling in one more birdie on the 12th and his lone bogey on the 14th. The Sunday bogey was just his second dropped shot of the weekend and it ended a run of 29 consecutive holes without a dropped shot. For Niemann the appearance in this weeks U.S. Open comes after a pair of close calls at the Latin American Amateur. With a Masters invitational hanging in the balance Niemann tied for third in 2016 and this past January he lost in three-man playoff. Niemann, from Chile, will make his U.S. Open debut on Thursday at 8:46 am CDT playing alongside Stephan Jaeger Joel Stalter. The group will begin on the 10th hole. -For a complete list of the tee times for the 14 amateurs in the field click here.
