PINEHURST, N.C. (June 14, 2014) -- U.S. Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick managed to withstand No. 2's fury through the first two rounds of the U.S. Open but couldn't maintain on Saturday's Round 3.
Fitzpatrick shot an 8-over 78 Saturday to fall down the leaderboard heading into Sunday's final round.
Following rounds of 71-73, Fitzpatrick was the only amateur to make the weekend cut at the U.S. Open.
Sunday will be the final competitive round as an amateur for Fitzpatrick, who'll turn professional after this week's action.
Fitzpatrick, who enjoyed a stellar summer in 2013, winning low amateur at the British Open in addition to winning the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., left Northwestern after just one semester to focus on his game.
