Gunnlaugur Árni Sveinsson has already made history for Icelandic golf. Now he'll have a chance to test his game against the world's best players at one of golf's most demanding championships.
The LSU standout became the first Icelandic man to qualify for the U.S. Open after surviving the grueling 36-hole Final Qualifying stage on Monday, earning a spot in the field at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
Competing at Lakes Golf & Country Club in Ohio as part of "Golf's Longest Day," Sveinsson fired rounds of 67 and 68 to finish at 9-under-par. His total left him tied with three other players for the final available qualifying positions, forcing a playoff to determine who would advance to the championship.
Sveinsson successfully navigated the playoff and secured one of the coveted spots, capping a dramatic day that included both setbacks and timely birdies. After briefly slipping down the leaderboard following a double bogey early in his round, he battled back with a string of birdies to remain in contention and eventually earn his place in the championship field.
The achievement represents a landmark moment for Icelandic golf. While Iceland has been represented in women's major championships, no Icelandic man had previously qualified for the U.S. Open. Sveinsson will now become the first to tee it up in America's national championship.
The breakthrough continues a steady rise for the Garðabær native, who has developed into one of the top collegiate players in the Southeastern Conference since arriving at LSU.
Sveinsson's AmateurGolf.com ranking record reflects that progression. In 2025, he posted a runner-up finish at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, finished third at the Puerto Rico Classic, and advanced to match play at the U.S. Amateur before reaching the Round of 64. Earlier in his LSU career, he recorded a runner-up finish at the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational and several top-25 finishes against elite collegiate fields.
This season, Sveinsson has continued to deliver consistent performances for the Tigers, including a T-13 finish at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational. His U.S. Open qualification is already the highlight of his 2026 campaign and one of the most significant accomplishments ever achieved by an Icelandic amateur golfer.
The rising LSU junior is also scheduled to represent the International Team at the Arnold Palmer Cup later this summer in Ireland, adding another prestigious event to what is becoming a career-defining year.
Before then, however, Sveinsson will head to Long Island carrying the hopes of an entire golfing nation. At Shinnecock Hills, the Icelandic trailblazer will have the opportunity to add another chapter to an already historic season.
