Tilly leads San Francisco City qualifying

The Cal player went 2 under at TPC Harding Park for an early lead in qualifying for the storied city championship

The San Francisco City Championship has begun, and so far, Finigan Tilly is the man on top. The San Carlos, Calif., resident had a 2-under 70 at TPC Harding Park in the first round of qualifying. Tilly, stroke-play medalist at the 2017 NCGA Match Play Championship, birdied his final hole for a one-shot edge.

Tilly is a member of the Cal men’s golf team who also won the Bayonet Black Horse Amateur in 2017.

Jake Yount finished solo second with a 1-under 71 that included six birdies but also a handful of high numbers. Yount had three bogeys and a double at the par-4 fifth.

Behind Yount, Scott Rescigno bogeyed his final two holes for an even-par 72.

All three of the top finishers played their qualifier at TPC Harding Park, but half of the field played the par-68 Lincoln Park Golf Club.

Rajvir Bedi, Ned Jensen and Brian Cooper Hunt had the best scores at Lincoln Park and at 1 over, were part of a seven-man tie for fourth. That group also included Colt McNealy, who bogeyed his first and last holes for a 1-over 73 at Harding Park. McNealy, younger brother to former Stanford player and current professional Maverick McNealy, is a regular on the California amateur circuit.

Seven more players tied for 11th at 2-over 74.
