The Johnnie-O at Sea Island: Georgia Southern and Florida Gulf Coast share title

Late surge lifts Georgia Southern into a tie with FGCU at 42-under as Rudy Sautron and Chun-Ta Wu share the individual title

Georgia Southern and Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) finished tied at 42-under 822 to share the Johnnie-O Collegiate title at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

Georgia Southern posted rounds of 265-282-275, while FGCU recorded 276-268-278 to match the total after 54 holes.

The Eagles produced a dramatic finish, playing their final five holes at 9-under par, including 4-under on the closing 18th hole, to catch FGCU at the top of the leaderboard. The rally secured Georgia Southern’s third team title of the season, following victories at the Golfweek Challenge in September and Bash in the Boro in October.

Georgia Southern’s charge was fueled by a strong back nine that featured a flurry of birdies and eagles. Junior Morgan Blythe led the effort with rounds of 64-72-66 to finish fourth at 14-under, highlighted by eight birdies in his final round.

For FGCU, junior Christian Figueredo was the top finisher, placing T-10 at 10-under (69-66-71).

Notre Dame, the 2024 champion, finished sixth at 35-under, while defending champion Cincinnati placed T-7 at 23-under. Notre Dame’s Jacob Modleski, the 2024 Jones Cup winner and co-medalist of the 2024 edition, finished ninth at 11-under.

In the individual competition, Nebraska junior Rudy Sautron and Minnesota sophomore Chun-Ta Wu shared medalist honors at 18-under 198.

Sautron’s total set a Nebraska school record for lowest 54-hole score, giving him his third individual title of the season and second straight win after sharing the title at the Hal Williams Collegiate earlier this spring. His season also includes a victory at the Git-R-Done Invitational in September.

Wu matched Sautron with rounds of 64-67-67 to claim his first collegiate victory. His 18-under total tied the lowest 54-hole score in Minnesota program history since 1994-95, matching Ben Warian’s mark at the 2024 High Meadows Intercollegiate.

The tournament produced one of the most dramatic finishes of the collegiate spring season as Georgia Southern’s late surge forced a share of the title with FGCU at Sea Island.
