The fog rolls in over the Golden Gate above Lincoln Park, where the City was first played in 1917.
On the first tee at Harding Park in March of 1956, with ten thousand people pressed against the ropes, Ken Venturi turned to Harvie Ward, the reigning U.S. Amateur champion and the best amateur in the country, and said: “Harvie, I’ve come to take my City back.”
He took it, 5 and 4. The match made the front page of every daily in San Francisco. Within eight years Venturi would win the U.S. Open. The City had simply seen him first.
