Austen Christiansen of Houston and Kendrick Vinar of Richardson share the first-round lead at the 117th Texas Amateur presented by Hytera US after both posted 3-under 68s on Thursday at Spanish Oaks Golf Club. Christiansen surged to the top with an early run of three birdies in his first four holes before adding key birdies on Nos. 15 and 17 to separate himself from the field. Vinar, the reigning Texas Mid-Amateur champion, matched the number with a rollercoaster finish that included back-to-back birdies on the final two holes.
Christiansen's round was built on consistency. Despite bogeys on Nos. 5 and 9, he played mistake-free golf on the back nine, carding birdies at 15 and 17 while making pars everywhere else. Vinar's path was far less straightforward. After reaching 4-under through 14 holes, consecutive double bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 threatened to derail his day before he responded with birdies on both 17 and 18 to reclaim a share of the lead.
