Steady play leads Ryan Voois to Agave Amateur title

Illinois commit closes with 10 straight pars to claim title at Shadow Hills Golf Club in Indio

Ryan Voois, a senior at Tesoro High School in Orange County, Calif., carded a final round 3-under 68 to win the Agave Amateur championship Monday afternoon at Shadow Hills Golf Club in Indio, Calif.

Voois finished the 54-hole event at 9-under 204, which was good for a one-stroke win over 36-hole leader Robert Keilch, who closed with an even par 71 after carding a 5-under 66 on Sunday.

Caden McMackin, a sophomore at Loyola Marymount, Canadian Cooper Humphreys and Brady Siravo, a senior at Jesuit High School in Sacramento, finished two back at 7-under 206.

Steady play carried the day for Voois, who will play collegiately next fall at the University of Illinois. Voois made birdies on holes 1, 4 and 8 and then finished off his round with 10 consecutive pars for a 3-under round of 68.

Voois and Humphreys were tied at 9-under with one hole remaining and seemed destined for a playoff. However, Voois won the title outright when Humphreys made a double bogey six on the closing hole after his tee shot found the water.

“I believe I won because of my tee to green game," said Voois. "I was never in trouble off the tee and gave myself a good look at birdie nearly every hole. Coming down the stretch, I was able to hit fairway after fairway and green after green, not giving my opponents any openings.

"I’ve been making some changes to my swing to improve my consistency, and to see results so quickly gives me confidence moving forward and belief in what I am doing. I’m honored to be able to compete against this field against great junior, college, and amateur players and feel really good about how my game can compete with theirs.”

The Agave Amateur is the eighth event of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series. The next event in the series is will be the Grapevine Amateur December 27-30 at Silverado Golf Resort (North Course) in Napa, California.
