Spencer wins Kansas Match Play in home game at Milburn

Spencer will be a senior at the University of Kansas in the fall.

Andy Spencer, who plays college golf for the University of Kansas, captured the 109th Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship on Sunday at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park, Kan. Spencer, a 21-year-year incoming senior at KU, is a member at Milburn. He bested 16-year old Nicklaus Mason of Shawnee in the 36-hole final match by an 8-and-6 margin.

Mason, the 2018 KGA Junior Player of the Year and Kansas Four-Ball champion, found himself down early thanks to early birdies by Spencer. Spencer led by a 4-up margin after the first 18 holes of the match and saw his lead swell during the second 18 holes.

Spencer finished the match off with a final birdie on the par 4 12th hole to complete the match and championship run.

This was the third time that the Kansas Amateur has been staged at the William B. Langford designed course. Previous years and champions were Jim Colbert in 1965 and Sean Thayer in 1999.
