Silver Salver: Tristan Leonard runs away with the win

Leonard took the field down by seven shots after shooting 14-under.

20-year-old Tristan Leonard from Gauteng, South Africa shot 14-under 274 to win the GNGU Silver Salver trophy, played out at Irene Country Club, the home of Gauteng North Golf Union.

Leonard, a member at the host club, shot rounds of 66-74-68-66 to win by a seven-shot margin over Wandre Snyman of Centurion Country Club, who shot rounds of 66-72-70-73 to finish as the runners-up at 7-under 281.

Leonard entered the final round in a three-way tie for the lead alongside Wandre Snyman and Nash de Klerk, all at 8-under 208. His final round got off to a strong start with consecutive birdies on the first two holes, and he added two more on Holes No. 7 and 9 to complete his front nine at an impressive 4-under 32.

While he did encounter a single hiccup with a bogey on No. 15, his commanding lead over the rest of the field had already decided the fate of the tournament. Leonard capped off his exceptional performance with an eagle on the par-5 No. 17, marking his second eagle of the week before securing the title on his home turf.

Last year, Leonard shot rounds of 81-72-73 to finish tied-30th in the tournament.

In 2023, Leonard has participated in 17 events and registered three other top-10 finishes, with the most recent being a T-6th finish at the Limpopo Open Stroke Play earlier in July.

The tournament attracted 156 amateur participants, with 70 successfully making it past the halfway cut, which was set at 8-over par.
