Shintaro Ban wins San Francisco City

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (March 9, 2014) -- Shintaro Ban put the finishing touches on an impressive run with a resounding win in the final match at the 2014 San Francisco City Championship. At Presidio Golf Course, Ban shot out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating Rick Reinsberg, 8-and-7. The Archbishop Mitty High School senior and recent UNLV commit was dominant in his run to the final and crowning moment. After earning the No. 32 seed during stroke-play qualfying last month, Ban went on a tear. In early match-play competition, he knocked off defending champion and top seed Will Bruecker and never stopped rolling.

Last weekend, he beat Ryan Gronlund to move to this weekend's semifinal. On Sunday, Ban, knocked off No. 4 Ryan Knop. It's a great day for the Ban family as Shintaro's older brother Shotaro, who plays collegiately at Cal, won the 2014 amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Amateur presented by Callaway Golf. Reinsberg, a former Cal golfer and five-time Alameda Commuters champion, had reached the championship match as the No. 27 seed and topped Ryan Wilson Saturday to advance. Last weekend, Reinsberg defeated No. 3 seed Justin Suh in the quarterfinals. Despite weighing just 135 pounds, Ban showed his might in the championship match. He was long off the tee and used his length to his advantage.
