Rice Planters: Cody jumps into lead

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (June 21, 2013) -- Duke's Austin Cody fired a second-round 66 to jump into the lead by one shot at the Rice Planters Amateur at Snee Farm Country Club. Cody opened Thursday after Wednesday's rainout with a 71 and trailed co-leaders James Antcliff and Spencer Lawson by three shots. Lawson withdrew while Antcliff shot 70 and sits in second place. Scott Vincent and Trevor Cone, teammates at Virginia Tech, fired identical 67s in Round 2 and are also in second place alongside Antcliff. The first round of the scheduled 72-hole event was wiped out from storms passing through the area. Tournament officials decided to begin play Thursday and make it a 54-hole event. Defending champion Thomas Bradshaw of Clemson is eight back of Cody after rounds of 72-73. The Rice Planters Amateur Golf Tournament was the inspiration of amateur golfer Dick Horne. During his first Porter Cup at the Niagara Falls Country Club in 1973, Horne befriended cup chairman Dick Harvey. Harvey encouraged a receptive Horne to develop his own southern tournament and, consequently, along with other Porter Cup officials, shared enough useful information to get Horne started in the South. That same year Horne, Tournament Chairman Ernie Chandler and other supporters organized the first Rice Planters Invitational Golf Tournament at Snee Farm Country Club. The annual event features some of the top up-and-coming players in collegiate golf.
