TEMPE, Az. (April 2, 2016) -- Jon Rahm claimed his third straight ASU Thunderbird Invitational Sunday while Iowa State took the team title.
Iowa State closed with a 2-under 282 for a 20-under par total that was just enough to edge Cal Berkeley by one shot. San Diego State took third at 17-under while host and defending champion Arizona State finished in fourth at 16-under.
Iowa State received a huge boost from junior Nick Voke who fired a 6-under 65 for a solo second finish. Sophomore Denzel Ieremia fired a final-round 73 for a solo 6th finish. This is the second tournament in a row that the pair has finished inside the top 10.
The individual honors was claimed by Arizona State's Jon Rahm, his third consecutive win in this event. Rahm's final round 68 gave him a three-shot victory over Nick Voke. With his win, he moves into 2nd in all-time wins at ASU, seven behind Phil Mickelson.
“I like to say I am the best right handed player to ever play at Arizona State.” Rahm told Sun Devil Athletics. “I mean “Lefty” Phil Mickelson is just a whole different story (laughter)…It truly is a huge honor. I wasn’t really thinking about that this week. I have thought about it before and really put pressure on myself. To be the second winning-est golfer in school history is definitely a huge honor and certainly something to be proud of.”
Rahm will continue his run at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State April 11-13 at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
