Fans of the women's game have a new name to learn to spell. We'll make it easy for you. It's Schremmer, and her first name is Scarlett. She lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and plays golf at the University of Miami.
And this friendly young lady who plays a style her coach calls "boy golf" is having herself quite the summer. After qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur with an 8-under 64, on top of two major amateur wins this summer, she stopped by Media Day at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, to get a look at what's ahead the first week in August. Scott Tomasello of AmateurGolf.com walked (and played) alongside her, and what follows is a transcript of one of their conversations as she took part in a "Play a Hole With Me" series for our Instagram.
Scott Tomasello:
Scarlett, coming fresh off an 8-under 64 yesterday at Black Creek, how are we feeling today?
Scarlett Schremmer:
I feel great. It's really nice to be out here at The Honors Course, and I actually wasn't sure that I was going to come out here until after I qualified. So it was a nice surprise, and coming off a 64 doesn't feel too bad either.
Scott:
You told me earlier it was a pretty smooth round—you didn't have to work too hard. What was going right for you out there?
Scarlett:
Well, for starters, the course was in really great condition, so it was nice to have putts where I knew that if I hit them on line, they had a chance to go in because the greens were so good. I also got a lot of numbers that I liked. I pretty much played the course the way I wanted to, hit the landing areas, hit some good iron shots, and made a couple of putts.
Scott:
Now we're out here at The Honors Course because you qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur, which starts soon. What do you think of the course so far?
Scarlett:
I think "pure" is almost an understatement. It's very nice out here. It's pretty similar to the kind of golf I played back home in Birmingham. It's the grass I'm used to, so I think that's really nice coming into the week. And I'm only about two and a half hours from home, so when you're traveling every week to tournaments, it's kind of rare to be able to just drive somewhere. It almost feels like I'm at home, and I just feel really comfortable out here.
Scott:
What's the main thing you're trying to learn today?
Scarlett:
Really, just seeing the course layout and figuring out where the landing areas are. I have another tournament next week in Indiana, but once I get home, I'll work on some of the short-game shots I'm seeing out here and dial in the yardages I'll be hitting off these tee boxes.
Scott:
You've been playing great lately. I texted Coach Garren this morning when I found out I'd be paired with you. How do you think he would describe your game?
Scarlett:
Oh my gosh! For one, he'd call me "Ned." And he'd probably say I play "boy golf." That's what he likes to say about me—just no fear, get up there, hit it, and try to make the putt. But Jim's a great golf coach. Honestly, he's one of the biggest reasons I chose Miami. He's one of my favorite things about the program, and I know he supports me no matter what. If he were describing my game, he'd probably say, "She's really good, but we're going to make her a lot better." That's what he'd say.
