Patrick Carter of West Virginia handed top seed Brad Nurski a 2-and-1 defeat in the round of 16, and will play in Sunday's semifinals

PINE VALLEY, N.J. — Saturday at the Crump Cup saw medalist Brad Nurski and defending champion Michael Muehr suffer defeats as Sunday's semifinalists prep for one last day at Pine Valley. Patrick Carter of Huntington, W.V. defeated tournament medalist Brad Nurski of St Joseph, Mo. in Saturday’s first round by a count of 2-and-1. Then he moved on to defeat 2013 champion Gene Elliott 4-and-3 in the afternoon to set up a semifinal match with Matthew Mattare of Jersey City, New Jersey. Mattare was one of nine co-medalists back in May at the Walter J. Travis Invitational, won by San Francisco's John Sawin, where Mattare made it to the final four at Garden City Golf Club, as well. He reached the semifinals with a morning victory over Michael McDermott, followed by a 2-up triumph over Muehr, the reigning champion. Atlanta resident Carlton Forrester, the 2006 champion, will take on Arnold Cutrell of Greensburg, Pa. in Sunday morning’s other semifinal matchup. Forrester handed Seth Sargent a 3-and-1 defeat on Saturday morning, advancing to the quarterfinals where he faced Stephen Summers and survived a close 1-up win. Cutrell battled Skip Berkmeyer in 19 holes in the round-of-16, then faced first-round leader Sawin and was victorious by a count of 2-and-1. Sunday morning’s semifinal matches in the Senior Division will feature Glenn Smeraglio of Newtown, Pa. against 2013 Senior champion Marty West of Rockville, Maryland. John McClure of Austin, Texas will face David Nelson of Reno, Nev. on the other side of the bracket.
