Northwestern, Lumsden win titles at Erin Hills college event

ERIN, Wis. (Oct. 2, 2018) – Northwestern made a clean sweep of the Marquette Intercollegiate on Tuesday, and on a U.S. Open venue, no less. The Wildcats won the team title by two shots and also claimed individual medalist in Ryan Lumsden at the Erin Hills-hosted college event.

Northwestern led after a first-round 2-under 286, then found the top spot on the leaderboard again on the final day. The Wildcats blistered Erin Hills, posting a 12-under team total that was the best of the day and moved the team to 6 under for the tournament. It was good enough for a two-shot victory over Arizona State. Host Marquette was third, eight shots back, followed by Ole Miss another three shots behind that.

Lumsden, the London, England, native, earned the only other individual title of his career at this event in 2016 when he was a sophomore. Lumsden paced the field this week on the 2017 U.S. Open course with 16 birdies in 54 holes. Northwestern also led the field in birdies made with 55.

Iowa’s men had a one-shot lead after the first round, but was unable to put up a team score in Round 2 when one player withdrew and another was disqualified. Neither Matthew Walker nor Gonzalo Leal posted a score in the second round. Consequently, Iowa finished at the bottom of the leaderboard.
