No. 20 New Mexico delivered a strong all-around performance to win the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, posting 32-under 820 (270-274-276) to secure its second title of the season at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Lobos held off No. 9 Arizona State, which finished runner-up at 28-under 824 (268-282-274). The Sun Devils, winners of the last three editions, were denied a fourth straight title. No. 28 Long Beach State finished third at 27-under, just one shot behind Arizona State.
The victory adds to New Mexico’s win at the Wohali Invitational in September, continuing a consistent season for the Lobos.
In the individual competition, junior Johnnie Clark, playing near his hometown of Mesa, delivered a breakthrough performance to win his first collegiate title at 14-under 199 (67-66-66). His total marked a career best and one of the few sub-200 scores in program history over 54 holes.
Clark’s win also highlighted a strong season for New Mexico, becoming the fourth Lobo to win individually this year, joining Mesa Falleur (Windon Memorial, The Goodwin) and Emil Albers (William H. Tucker Intercollegiate).
Long Beach State senior Alejandro de Castro Piera and Arizona State freshman Boston Bracken shared runner-up honors at 11-under 202. De Castro posted 70-64-68, while Bracken carded 64-72-66.
New Mexico showcased its depth with five players inside the top 20. Senior Mesa Falleur finished 8th at 6-under 207 (70-68-69), while sophomore Clark Sonnenberg was T-13 at 4-under 209 (68-71-70).
Junior Wyatt Provence (67-72-71) and freshman Thayer Plewe (68-69-73) shared T-16 at 3-under 210.
Statistically, the Lobos led the field with 68 birdies, nine more than Arizona State. Clark also topped the field in par-4 scoring (3.73) and total birdies (19), while Falleur led in par-5 scoring (4.22).
With both depth and firepower, New Mexico produced a complete performance to take control and close out a key win heading into the latter part of the season.
