Mike McCoy wins George C. Thomas Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (June 29, 2013) -- Maybe the second mid-amateur spot on the 2013 Walker Cup isn't a lock after all. While many believe that South Carolina school teacher Todd White will join obvious first mid-am selection Nathan Smith as the second "25 and over" member of the USA Walker Cup team, don't be so sure. There are several players that fill the bill of qualities needed -- proven winners, ball strikers, and excellent putters that can play the toughest courses. McCoy used all of those skills to post rounds of 67-67-70=204 at Los Angeles Country Club in winning the George C. Thomas Invitational, a second year event that honors the club's famed architect. McCoy, who is always solid with the flat stick, said it was an especially strong week. "I am rolling the ball well," McCoy told Global Golf Post. "I have been working on it, and it is paying off." The USGA will have plenty of chances to watch McCoy in the near future -- in June he qualified for the U.S. Senior Open to be played in Omaha. In the Spring, McCoy won the Coleman Invitational at a course that shares some similarities to National Golf Links of America - Seminole in Florida. And in the same week he qualified for the Senior Open, he finished in the top 20 at the Northeast Amateur. Scott Rowe finished second, while Pennsylvania's Chip Lutz won his second straight senior division title over Nevada's Brady Exber.
