CARMICHAEL, Calif. (May 27, 2017) -- Memorial Amateur tournament director and founder John Rochelle decided to switch up the nines for the 20th annual playing of his tournament.
"A few people have asked about it," said Rochelle. "The front nine is more spectator friendly, and it ends in a 230-yard par-3 -- that should be really interesting."
Indeed, Rochelle pointed out on the phone that none other than Augusta National saw it's nines reversed when Clifford Roberts made the change after Alister MacKenzie's passing.
The change is reflective of the level of dedication and attention to detail that Rochelle and the tournament's volunteers have put into making it achieve its two goals: bringing top players together for a 54 hole championship and honoring Memorial Day and its cherished place as a national holiday.
With perfect golf temperatures in the low 80s for today's opening round, it's no surprise to see players take it low at Ancil Hoffman, designed by legendary golf course architect William Francis Bell.
Josh McCollum (Upland, Calif.) and David Laskin of Elk Grove are tied at the top at 6-under 66. McCollum just finished his freshman year at Creighton University in Nebraska.
Laskin also recently finished his freshman year -- at University of Arizona. He might be considered to have a "home course advantage" even though Ancil Hoffman isn't his home track. He plays out of Valley Hi, a country club also designed by William Bell.
Trailing the pair is Cameron Champ of Sacramento at 68. Another shot back after rounds of 69 are Alex Lee of Sacramento and local favorite Matthew Sutherland of Carmichael.
