Max Sekulic wins Saguaro Amateur in playoff

Sekulic defeated Austin Fox of California in sudden-death after the two tied at 10-under in regulation at Ak Chin Southern Dunes

After making eight birdies in regulation in today's final round of the Saguaro Amateur, Canadian golfer Max Sekulic only needed a par in sudden-death to take the title over Austin Fox.

Sekulic fired 66 on the day to finish the 54-hole tournament played at Ak Chin Southern Dunes at 10-under. That total score was one stroke in front of a surging Ryan Grider of Texas (who fired 31 on the back nine for 66) and second round leader Carter Graf of Canada.

But Austin Fox of Folsom was able to join Sekulic at 10-under with an amazing comeback that ended with a birdie on No. 18. Fox seemingly shot himself out of contention with a bogey-double run at Nos. 6 and 7, giving back at least three shots to the field -- especially when many were making birdie on the par-5 7th.

But then Fox did something really special.

After making birdie on No. 9 to finish at even par, the University of The Pacific senior posted 5-under 31 on the back nine for 67 and a share of the lead.

Fox and Sekulic played off for the title, with Sekulic winning with a par. He will head back to Washington State with the Saguaro Amateur trophy in tow.
