BIRMINGHAM, AL (June 4, 2017) - For Matt Van Zandt 69 was the magic number this week at the Birmingham National Invitational. Playing on the West Course of the Country Club of Birmingham, Zandt fired three consecutive 69's to finish 6-under and as the winner by four shots over Woodie Eubanks. For Zandt, a former Texas A&M golfer, the victory was his first AmateurGolf.com Ranking victory since 2014 when he captured the Carlton Woods Invitational. Eubanks took second place with a 2-under showing, Bob Royak and Jack Hall shared third at 2-over while in fifth it was Clay Guerin and Steven Groover at 3-over. Other notable finishers including Jospeh Deraney (7th; +5), Patrick Christovich (T8; +6) and Doug Hanzel (T29; +11) Editors Note: The Birmingham National Invitational is being played this year for the first time since 2015 after the event was cancelled last year as the course prepared for the USGA Team Championship. 36-Hole Recap Matt Van Zandt has combined consecutive rounds of 69-69 and at 138 he is the leader by two with one round remaining at the Birmingham National Invitational hosted by the West Course of the Country Club of Birmingham. When play resumes on Sunday Zandt, a former Texas A&M golfer, will be looking to close out his first AmateurGolf.com Ranking event win since his 2014 victory at the Carlton Woods Invitational. Woodie Eubanks (69-71--140) will begin the final day in second place, Bob Royak (70-71--141) is in third, Steven Groover (69-74--143) sits in fourth while Jack Hall (72-72--144) is fifth. The first round concluded on Saturday morning after day one play was suspended due to rain on Friday.
