OCONOMOWOC, WI (July 20, 2017) - Matt Tolan of Eau Claire shot a one-under 69 at Oconomowoc Golf Club on Thursday to win the Wisconsin State Amateur by four shots over Eddie Wadja of Brookfield.
Tolan, a rising sophomore at the University of South Dakota, entered the final round two shots ahead of the field after returning the low score of the tournament, a five-under 65 in the third round.
Tolan was never seriously threatened in the final round, as he went out with a solid eight pars and a birdie on the front nine, and then an even-par back nine.
His closest pursuer, Wadja, fell three behind midway through his front nine, and a double at the eleventh ultimately made Tolan's lead insurmountable. Still, Wadja finished solo second at three-under 277.
Ben Skogen of Onalaska and Peter Webb of Madison finished tied for third at two-under 278 and were the only other players in the field under par.
While this is Tolan's most significant win, it is not his first. As a freshman, Tolan won the first college tournament he ever played in, winning the UNO Invitational in Omaha, NE.
