LA ROMANA, Dominican Republican – Nicolas Echavarria hit his tee shot out of bounds on hole 17 in round two of the Latin America America Championship. The double bogey wouldn't prove costly, however, as seven birdies and an eagle in the holes prior gave the Columbian a 7-under 65.
Echavarria's 65 would be matched by Alejandro Tosti of Argentina. Tosti also knocked his tee shot out of bounds on 17, yet his nine birdies on the day make the hole much easier to forget.
Echavarria, a senior at Arkansas, leads at 7-under par with Tosti just three shots behind. The exemption into this year's Masters will be very much on their minds heading into the final two rounds.
“That is where anyone wants to be,” Echavarria told Golf Channel, “but there’s still a lot of golf yet to play.”
Only 11 players are under-par Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog course and only two other plays are within five shots of Echavarria's lead.
The field was cut to the low 50 players and ties at 6-over par or better.
