ROSEBURY, Australia — Lucas Herbert, 19 of Victoria, Australia, was essentially the last man into the 64-man match play portion of the Australian Men's Amateur, which began Thursday morning at The Australian Golf Club.
He drew medalist and No. 1 seed Nick Marsh of England in the opening round, and despite being down three through the first four holes, Herbert, an Australian National Squad member, managed to fight his way back and knock off the top seed.

Herbert made the turn two-up on Marsh and finished him off 4-and-3. He will face Naoyuki Kataoka of Japan in Friday morning's round-of-32 match.
On the women's side, No. 1 seed and medalist So-Young Lee defeated Wenyung Keh of New Zealand 5-and-3 and advanced to the round-of-16 to face Yiyi Liu of China, who needed 24 epic holes to defeat Eunice Kim of Korea.
Notable men making it through to Friday's second round include top-ranked amateur Corey Conners of Canada, who is coming off a win last week at the Lake Macquarie Amateur. He beat Sung-Ho Yun of Korea 3-and-2 and will square off with Daisuke Matsubara of Japan in the second round.
Zach Murray, who earlier this month became the youngest Australian Master of the Amateurs winner in the tournament's history, lost his opening-round match to Matsubara 4-and-3. Matsubara came out firing with an eagle at the first, and birdies at the second and fourth.
Other players moving on to the second round include defending champion Tae Koh of New Zealand, who will face England's Paul Howard, Queensland's Taylor MacDonald, and Victoria's Ryan Ruffels.
