Through two rounds of the Magnolia Amateur, Texas Tech’s Andy Lopez had already begun to pull away. The Texas native threw out eight birdies on his way to a second-round 4-under 67 on Saturday at Hattiesburg (Miss.) CC for a four-shot lead.
On Sunday, effects from Hurricane Barry moved into the area, washing out the final round of play. It left Lopez with the title.
Lopez teed it up in the Magnolia Amateur just days after qualifying for the U.S. Amateur in Louisiana. Lopez, a Texas native, opened with 66. He reached 9 under for the tournament.
Lopez had a four-shot lead on Charlotte’s Trey Tobias after the second round. Tobias had rounds of 68-69 to reach 5 under.
Two mid-amateurs tied for third at 4 under. Eddie Brescher and Jonathan Bale each had rounds of 79-68 – though in opposite orders – to reach 4 under.
Houston’s Logan Young was solo fifth followed by three men tied for sixth, including recent Spirit of America winner Drew Mathers.
