With more lead changes than a NASCAR race at Talladega, Lansdon Robbins pulled ahead of the pack to claim the 106th Carolinas Amateur.
Paired with the overnight leader and UNC signee Peter Fountain (202) and Wofford junior Walker Jones (203), Robbins began the day just two shots behind Fountain when the final round began at Cape Fear Country Club.
“It was a battle all day. It was back and forth,” Robbins told the Carolinas Golf Association. “Walker [Jones] and Peter [Fountain] both played great. I knew playing those last five holes at even par wasn’t going to win it. I would have liked to get a couple more birdies than just one, but it was good enough. I was able to get ahead, hold off the competition, and get the job done.”
The one birdie was just enough to get the win as Robbins -- a redshirt freshman at UNC Wilmington -- took the crown with a 17-under 271. Both Jones and Fountain finished at 16-under to split second place.
Making birdies on Nos. 6 and 7, Robbins was looking for the 13th and final lead change of the tournament as he was one shot back of Fountain through No. 10. Gaining strokes on Nos. 11, 13, and 15, Robbins gained control before a weather delay slowed his momentum.
The delay may have been a saving grace for Robbins as Jones stayed stagnant with eight pars on the final nine holes and Fountain could only muster one birdie on the final three holes following the delay.
“It means a lot. It’s been a rough past year-and-a-half or so with injuries and all the stuff that happened this past season with it getting canceled,” Robbins said. “I only had two opportunities to play in tournaments this summer, and I won them both, so I think I took advantage of a weird summer pretty well.”
