Lampson cruises to six-shot Sizzler win at Troon North

Lampson went 2 over in the five holes of the final round, then played his last 13 holes at 5-under par to win.

Trevor Lampson, of Gilbert, Ariz., won the Sizzler Amateur at Troon North Golf Club (Monument) in Mesa, Ariz., by shooting rounds of 67-65-69 to finish at 15 under. He was six shots ahead Aaron Ramos of Mesa, Ariz.

Lampson went 2 over in the five holes of the final round, then played his last 13 holes at 5-under par. He started off the first round by grabbing the lead at 5-under par and then played his last 13 holes in 9-under par during the second round en route to a 65. Lampson will begin his senior season at local Grand Canyon University this fall.

“I’m just really happy I got the win in a Troon Saguaro Amateur Series event,” Lampson said. “I’ve played in several of them and it is nice to finally get a win in one of them. I drove the ball really well and didn’t put myself in any positions to make any high numbers. You can make some high numbers on this golf course and I did a really good job of keeping my tee shots in the fairway. Definitely gives me more confidence in the rest of my tournaments this summer and hopefully keeps the momentum going into my last season at GCU.”

Behind Ramos at 9 under, Ignacio Arcaya was third at 8 under with consistent rounds of 68-67. San Diego resident Steve Sugimoto was fourth at 5 under followed by Christian Banke in fifth another shot back.

Mark and Maverick Pavletich, of Bakersfield, Calif., were the rare father-duo to compete in this week’s Sizzler Amateur. The event was extra special as the practice round was held on Father’s Day. The elder Pavletich shot 75-75-72 (T-33) with son Maverick besting dad at 69-71-73 (T-6).
