PINE VALLEY, N.J. — John Sawin of San Francisco, who already has a prestigious invitational title under his belt in 2015, is up by two in stroke play qualifying for the 2015 Crump Cup after a 3-under par 67 at Pine Valley Golf Club on Thursday.
Sawin, who captured the Walter J. Travis Invitational back in May at Garden City Golf Club, posted 1-under 34 on the front side before coming in with 2-under 33 to conclude his opening round. He leads by two over Jeff Osberg of West Chester, Pennsylvania.
An even 16 players are at 73 or better, as the field fights for the coveted 16 spots into the top bracket heading to match play. Defending champion Michael Muehr, who is a two-time winner of the Crump Cup, is tied for 10th place at 2-over 72.
In the Senior division, Matthew Sughrue and Martin West both posted 72 on day one, and lead defending U.S. Senior Amateur champion Patrick Tallent by a stroke. Sughrue finished runner-up at this year's British Senior Amateur, which was won by Tallent.
Defending senior winner Chip Lutz of Reading, Pa. is not in the field this year.
